OLIVE OIL... YES PLEASE

Collaboration with St-Méthode Bakery

Olive oil is an integral part of the Mediterranean diet—the dietary approach with the most scientific evidence to support its benefits on overall health. Several studies have specifically assessed the favourable effects of olive oil on health… Here’s an overview of its virtues…

Unsaturated fats

Olive oil is high in unsaturated fats and low in saturated fats. Unsaturated fats—mostly monounsaturated—make up about 85% of its total lipids. This proportion of good fats has been found to reduce the risks of cardiovascular disease.

Phenolic compounds

Olive oil also contains various phenolic compounds, which have antioxidant properties. Extra virgin olive oil obtained from cold pressed olives has the highest quantity of phenolic compounds.

Olive oil and health

A study published in 2018 examined the specific impact of olive oil consumption on health. The results showed that the consumption of olive oil is beneficial for one’s health, notably when it comes to preventing cardiovascular disease, breast cancer, and type 2 diabetes.A second study, published in 2020, assessed the impact of olive oil consumption on the risk of cardiovascular disease development in American adults. The study was conducted on a sample of 61,181 women participating in the Nurses’ Health Study and 31,797 men in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, using data collected from 1990 to 2014. The results of the study indicated that participants who consumed more olive oil (> 7.5 ml/day) had a 14% lower risk of cardiovascular disease compared to non-consumers. It also showed that replacing 5 g of various fats (margarine, butter, mayonnaise) per day with an equal amount of olive oil was associated with a 5% to 7% lower total risk of cardiovascular disease. Thanks to its high content of unsaturated fats and phenolic compounds, olive oil has a favourable nutritional profile—one that makes it good for your health! Used as part of a healthy and balanced diet, it can help reduce the risk of various chronic illnesses. All the loaves in St-Méthode’s Campagnolo range are made with this precious elixir. The 100% Whole Wheat and 9 Whole Grains loaves also deliver the benefits of whole grains on cardiovascular health. These breads can serve as the inspiration for delicious Mediterranean recipes!
